In particular, it revealed what is needed, in terms of adjustments in the legal structure, by Japan in order to shift towards the Anglo-Saxon type of competition law, and how actually difficult such an adjustment is.After this, those present were treated to a sumptuous ethnic buffet prepared by the scholarship recipients, and enjoyed a pleasant moment chatting with each other.

  • Karuizawa Trip in Rain
From July 25 (Friday) to 27 (Sunday), AISF held the 3rd "Rest and Relaxation Trip to Karuizawa". Until now, this activity has been able to avoid bad weather. However, this time the Japanese archipelago was under the onslaught of typhoon #9 causing the July 26 barbecue party to be helde at the roofed veranda of the Executive Directress Atsumi's country house. Nevertheless, the party was kindly joined in by Dr. Takako Aoki and Dr.Yotaro Hatamura, the head and member, respectively, of the AISF Selection Committee, and AISF Directors Naoko Sato and Naoki Atsumi. In the middle of the cold rain, a warm and friendly atmosphere filled the living room and kitchen, making for a pleasant day at the country house. In the evening, we were treated to an ethnic dinner dished up by the scholarship recipients (present and past), which quickly vanished under the hearty welcome of an "in-house typhoon". In touch with nature's beauty, the 1997 AISF scholarship recipients and the members of the Raccoon Association (AISF Alumni) were able to spend a relaxing weekend with their family, enjoying hiking, tennis, walking, and cycling under the trees when weather permitted.

  • Visit to Kajima Technical Research Institute
On July 3rd, 1997, 11 AISF Recipients and 3 members of the Raccoon Association and AISF staff went to the Kajima Technical Reserch Institute at Nishi-Chofu, Tokyo. After the explanation about the Institute by the Director Kozo Toyama, the participants, under the guidance of Mr. Tadahiro Shimazu, Head of Planning Office, saw various laboratories including the Wind Tunnel, the Shaking Table, as well as the Roof Garden using artificial light-weight cultured soil. Mr. Shimazu kindly answered their many questions and they all learned a lot.
