- Research Presentations for Fiscal Year 2000
The research presentations of the 12 recipients for fiscal year 2000 were
held last March 3, 2001 at the Atsumi Foundation. The foundation's final
activity for this year, the meeting was successfully concluded thanks to the
participation of the current and next batch of scholarship recipients, the
members of Raccoon-Kai (alumni association), the foundation's directors and
trustees, and those who provide assistance for international students in
Japan. The presenters met with some difficulty in trying to explain, within 15
minutes, their research results in terms understandable to a child.
Nevertheless, the presentations were made splendidly, Many presenters
challenged PowerPoint (Presentation Software) for the first time, but they all
went very well. The presentations were followed by greetings from the AISF
Director Mr. Tomohiro Toyama, a lawyer, AISF Trustee Dr. Terukazu Akiyama,
Professor Emeritus of University of Tokyo, and Mr. Yoshio Hara, Director of
Kajima Art Foundation. The meeting was concluded by an introduction to the
Sekiguchi Global Research Association (SGRA) by Mr. Tadahiro Shimazu, Chief of
its Operation Committee. Participants all enjoyed the glasses of beer and
Chinese food, as well as lively conversation.

- Raccoonkai in Bangkok
A Raccoonkai was held on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Restaurant Bussaracum in
Bangkok, where people enjoy relatively cooler and drier weather. All the Thai
Raccoons (Viravat 1996, Noi 1997, and Prachya 1999) and Imanishi got together
and enjoyed the food and conversation. One of the main topics was about the
Thai universities; whether it is appropriate to award honorary Ph.D. to Tiger
Woods, as well as the "hitting a nail that sticks out" problem,
which might be familiar to many Raccoons working in Asian countries. Imanishi
visited, during her stay in Bangkok, three major universities in Thailand,
i.e., Prachya's Kasetsart University, Viravat's Thammasat University, and
Noi's Chulalongkorn University. She was very happy to find that all the
Raccoons are working hard, doing well in the respective schools.
Imanishi then visited Khin Maung Htwe (1996 Raccon) in Yangon, Myanmar.
Please read her Myanmar report in SGRA Kawaraban. (http://www.aisf.or.jp/sgra/)
- The Gathering of Atsumi Scholarship Recipients
A yearly event, "The Gathering of Atsumi Scholarship Recipients"
was held in the evening of October 3rd (Tue) from 18:30. About 30 people
including AISF directors and trustees, Raccoon members, and scholarship
recipients attended. This year, the AISF selection committee chair, Dr. Yotaro
Hatamura, Professor of Engineering at the University of Tokyo gave a talk
entitled "The Creation of Technology."
Dr. Hatamura talked a lot about "frightening stories" which
pointed to some general problems in Japan's technological field, such as: it
is extremely important to learn from failure; in our excessive pursuit of
efficiency, we tend to forget what we learned from the past; we have cut off
less important routes so when the main route crashes it becomes difficult to
quickly shift to another route; most workers just follow manuals and nobody
can see the whole picture anymore, hence nobody can make correct judge when an
accident happens; since the average evolution cycle of a technique is thirty
years, many industries, including semiconductors, are ending their most
prosperous periods; since the sense of crises is not enough in Japan, we will
still have many accidents in the next ten years. In the last 10 minutes, Dr.
Hatamura introduced many projects in the nano-technology done in his
laboratory. After his talk, he answered many questions including: "Does
the development of science necessary for mankind?" (Answer: Science does
not make people happy but it is human's curiosity which caused the development
of science); "Does science explain the human feeling?" (Answer: Even
human feelings are now being explained by the movement of something physical
within the human body) The record of the talk is now being prepared.
After the lecture, participants enjoyed the conversation with Mr. Shibata
of Monbusho, a special guest of the evening, as well as the AISF directors and
trustees.

- Karuizawa Trip
-
- This year's Karuizawa trip felt extra busy. In addition to the usual
mountain-climbing, watermelon-smashing, fireworks, and garden barbeque
party, this year's trip included two seminars, one get-together with a VIP,
and meeting visiting officials of the CISV International, Ltd. (Childrens'International
Summer Villages). The two seminars were continuations of last year's
meetings. This time, these meetings were organized by the Sekiguchi Global
Research Association (SGRA), and focused on major research issues being
addressed by SGRA, i.e., Global Citizenship, and IT and Education. The
get-together was with the current President of Shinsei Bank, Mr. Yashiro.
All in all it was a truly international and multi-disciplinary trip in
which the current scholarship recipients, Raccooonkai and SGRA members
participated actively.

- Raccoonkai in Taipei
-
- From May 3 to 5 during the Goden Week, Junko Imanishi and her daughter
Asuka visited Taipei and were welcomed by Dr. Der-Juinn Horng (1995 Kobe
Raccoon), Dr. Meili Fang (1997 Raccoon), and Dr. Jie Chi Yang (1999
Raccoon). They enjoyed visiting the following places: the re-development
project of the Pei-tou Spa, a volunteer work of Dr. Horng; the Shih-lin
night market guided by Dr. Fang; the questions and answers in the Dr. Fang's
class at Fu-Jen Catholic University; the Raccoonkai dinner at the best hotel
in Taipei; a midnight tea party on the top of the mountain in the Mao-kong
Area; the meeting with the President of the National Central University
where Dr. Horng and Dr. Yang work; the visit the historical site of the
ancestry shrine of Hakka; the ambitious project of making an educational
cyber city at Dr. Yang's Laboratory. Junko was very pleased to be able to do
so many things during such a short period, and to see the ex-scholarship
students are doing well in the universities in their own country.
