yashikijiro　屋敷城

A small castle or fortification built like a a country house or mansion, yashiki 屋敷. In the middle ages, it usually referred to a country house with fortress-like, defensive installations. In the early modern period, even fortresses shiro-no-kamame 城の構え, that were used as residences were termed yashikijiro. Jurakudai 聚楽第 (1587), built in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉 (1536-98) and intended to be his government office as Chief Councilor to the Emperor was clearly a yashikijiro.
