A modern city in the southern part of Kyoto where Byoudouin •½“™‰@ (1052), is located. Historically, Uji was a resort for the nobility during the Heian period, and was frequently depicted in painting. The last ten chapters, UJI JUUJOU ‰FŽ¡\’Ÿ of GENJI MONOGATARI Œ¹Ž•¨Œê (The Tale of Genji) was set in Uji, as was *Ukifune •‚M, and *Ujigawa no kassen ‰FŽ¡ì‚̇í (The Battles of Uji River) in HEIKE MONOGATARI •½‰Æ•¨Œê (The Tale of The Heike). In painting Uji was symbolized by its river, bridge and fishing traps, as seen in *Ujibashi ajiro-zu ‰FŽ¡‹´–Ô‘ã}.
