tochibuki　栩葺

A type of board roofing *itabuki yane 板葺屋根, whereby boards tochi-ita 栩板, about 1-3cm thick and 60cm long are split along the straight grain and laid in such a way as to have a considerable overlap. Another type of board roofing is called tokusabuki 木賊葺. A single board tokusa-ita 木賊板, not as thick as tochi-ita, is laid between thinly split *kokera-ita 柿板 and tochi-ita. Roofs of tochibuki were used extensively on tenements, shops, warriors' gates and even mansions in the 16-17c. Examples can be found on the Koumyouji Nioumon 光明寺仁王門 (1249) in Kyoto.
