The structured elements that cover a window, entrance or other opening to protect them from the weather or the inside of the structure from thieves. Examples include plank doors, itado 板戸, latticed doors koushido 格子戸, and plank doors with horizontal crosspieces *mairado 舞良戸. Sliding doors used to partition interior space are included. They may be translucent paper covered screens *shouji 障子, or opaque screens *fusuma 襖. Doors suspended from the top are also considered to an example of *shitomido 蔀戸. Doors pushed up from the bottom are called *tsunodo 角戸. Hinged doors *tobira 扉, are classified separately. Doors may also be identified by their composition, or by their composition and design. Ajirodo 網代戸 are made of woven bamboo or wickerwork. *Sugido 杉戸 are made of cryptomeria, also called Japanese cedar. To are also classified by their purpose; *amado 雨戸 are rain shutters, *tsumado 妻戸 is a back door to a stable or a side door.
