Collection of Young Trees of Painting; one volume biography of Japanese painters by Kanou Ikkei 狩野一渓 (1599-1662). Compiled ca.1650, the biography includes 153 artists, beginning with Minchou 明兆 (1352-1431), and is divided into medieval chuusei 中世 ink painters, Tosa 土佐 artists, Kanou main families (with lineage chart), and post-Keichou 慶長 era (after 1615) painters not included in the Tosa or Kanou schools, *Tosaha 土佐派 or *Kanouha 狩野派. The text seems to be a rough draft probably written between 1648-55 (Keian 慶安 to Jouou 承応 eras), while the last part of the work including the lineage of Chinese-style painters is likely by a later author. TANSEI JAKUBOKUSHUU is the oldest extant study of Japanese painters and an important precursor to *HONCHOU GASHI 本朝画史, from which it differs in regards to the content of many biographies. Modeled on the Chinese work Tuhui Baojian (Jp: *TOKAI HOUKAN 図絵宝鑑), biographical entries include information on the artists background, including anecdotal accounts, as well as an assessment of his merit or importance.
