Collection of Young Trees of Painting; one volume biography of Japanese painters by Kanou Ikkei Žë–ìˆêŒk (1599-1662). Compiled ca.1650, the biography includes 153 artists, beginning with Minchou –¾’› (1352-1431), and is divided into medieval chuusei ’†¢ ink painters, Tosa “y² artists, Kanou main families (with lineage chart), and post-Keichou Œc’· era (after 1615) painters not included in the Tosa or Kanou schools, *Tosaha “y²”h or *Kanouha Žë–ì”h. The text seems to be a rough draft probably written between 1648-55 (Keian ŒcˆÀ to Jouou ³‰ž eras), while the last part of the work including the lineage of Chinese-style painters is likely by a later author. TANSEI JAKUBOKUSHUU is the oldest extant study of Japanese painters and an important precursor to *HONCHOU GASHI –{’©‰æŽj, from which it differs in regards to the content of many biographies. Modeled on the Chinese work Tuhui Baojian (Jp: *TOKAI HOUKAN }ŠG•óŠÓ), biographical entries include information on the artists background, including anecdotal accounts, as well as an assessment of his merit or importance. The text is reproduced in Sakazaki Tan âè’R, ed. NIHON GARON TAIKAN “ú–{‰æ˜_‘åŠÏ, 2:923-950.
