Written susa 寸莎. Also tsuta つた. A generic term for fibrous substances, including straw, hemp, or paper which were mixed into clay for reinforcement. Susa was used in clay statues *sozou 塑像 to prevent cracking and shrinkage and to prevent cracks forming in earthen walls *tsuchikabe 土壁. Straw fibres were known as warasusa 藁すさ, paper fibres as kamisusa 紙すさ and so on. | ||||||
