Also written 墨隈. A shading *kumadori 隈取 technique using black ink *sumi 墨 which is commonly employed in non-western painting. Water is first applied to the painting surface then ink is added, resulting in a soft, blurred shading which leaves no clear brush marks. Used to give a sense of three-dimensionality to the object depicted, or to represent clouds or mist, or to lend a sense of atmosphere to the painting. When used as ground or background shading, it serves to emphasize the subject of the painting. | ||||||
