Lit. green-glazed roof tiles. A decorative green glaze is applied to the pendants *gatou Š’“–, of semi-circular, convex eave-end tiles *nokimarugawara Œ¬ŠΫŠ’, decorated with a lotus motif *rengemon ˜@‰Ψ•Ά. The pendants of broad, concave eave-end tiles *nokihiragawara Œ¬•½Š’ are ornamented with an arabesque pattern *karakusamon “‚‘•Ά. Glazed tiles of this type have been excavated at Toushoudaiji “‚΅’ρŽ›, Daianji ‘εˆΐŽ›, Toudaiji “Œ‘εŽ› and Saidaiji Ό‘εŽ›, all in Nara. Green-glazed roof tiles continued to be used during the Heian period, and have been excavated from sites that include the Heian palace and Kyouougokokuji ‹³‰€Œμ‘Ž› (Touji “ŒŽ›, 1191), Kyoto, and at the site of Saiji ΌŽ›.
