| A tail rafter. A large rafter which usually extends through the second step of a 3-stepped bracket complex *mitesaki tokyou 三手先斗きょう and supports the third or the outermost bracket complex. The inner end of the tail rafter extends deep into the building. The roof load bears down on this end to counteract the downward pressure of the eaves on the opposite end. In Zen style architecture *zenshuuyou 禅宗様, the odaruki extends through the first and second steps of a three-stepped bracket complex. Three tail rafters are used if a bracket complex is "stepped" out four times. | ||||||
