Records name six generations of sculptors dating back to Joucou 定朝 (?-1057), followed by Kakujo 覚助, Raijo, Koujo, and Jouchou 成朝. In the late 12c the Koufukuji workshop became well-known for the influential sculptors Koukei 康慶, Unkei 運慶 (?-1223) and Kaikei 快慶, whose school became known as *Keiha 慶派. Exposure to ancient (6-8c) works and other elements of Chinese art are said to have given nara busshi a style distinct from Kyoto sculptors *kyouto busshi 京都仏師. This formed the basis of the Keiha style in the Kamakura period, kamakura shin'you 鎌倉新様. After the late 14c, nara busshi, including the Keiha, were called *nanto busshi 南都仏師. | ||||||
