mitsudasou 密陀僧

Lit. yellow lead monoxide, PbO. Made by heating lead. Used as a yellow pigment in early Japanese painting, for example on murals in the Houryuuji *Kondou 法隆寺金堂, Nara. Mixed with vegetable oil and heated, mitsudasou was used as a pigment binder *baizai 媒剤 for traditional Japanese oil painting yuga 油画, or as a varnish over mineral paints *iwa-enogu 岩絵具 based in animal glue.
