Ablutions performed to remove sin or illness. As a pictorial theme it is most closely associated with Section 65 of ISE MONOGATARI ˆÉØ•ØŒź (The Tales of Ise ; see *ise monogatari-e ˆÉØ•ØŒźŠG), which relates the story of a young man (Ariwara no Narihira ŻŒ“‹Ę•½; 825-80) who prays to the gods to rid him of his lust for consort of the emperor. Famous examples include a hanging scroll by Ogata Kourin ”öŒ`Œõ—Ō (1658-1716) in Hatakeyama Kinenkan ”©ŽR‹L”OŠŁ, Tokyo, which depicts the young man with a diviner holding a nusa •¼, a ritual staff (ritual paper-streamers).
