Ablutions performed to remove sin or illness. As a pictorial theme it is most closely associated with Section 65 of ISE MONOGATARI ÉØØź (The Tales of Ise ; see *ise monogatari-e ÉØØźG), which relates the story of a young man (Ariwara no Narihira Ż“Ę½; 825-80) who prays to the gods to rid him of his lust for consort of the emperor. Famous examples include a hanging scroll by Ogata Kourin ö`õŌ (1658-1716) in Hatakeyama Kinenkan ©RLOŁ, Tokyo, which depicts the young man with a diviner holding a nusa ¼, a ritual staff (ritual paper-streamers). | ||||||
