manga 漫画 | ||||||
KEY WORD : art history / paintings
Edo period sketches usually done impromptu or in fun, often of unusual or humorous subjects. In modern times manga has come to mean specifically comic or satiric pictures, often in book form. In Hokusai manga 北斎漫画 (Hokusai's Caricatures), the first volume of which was published in 1814, the painter Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾北斎 (1760-1844) claims that he freely drew pictures of images that were seen or occurred in his mind.
