maneki-zukuri 招造 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
A style of gable roof, manekiyane 招屋根, in which one side is a standard normal length from ridge to eave ends and the other side, usually the rear, is very short. The roof is shaped like a visor. It is similar in shape to a short piece of roofing which is placed above a window to deflect rain away from the window pane. This style of roofing is frequently used at tea-house waiting shelters *machiai 待合 where people rest until their turn to participate in the tea ceremony. Toilets and thatched huts frequently have this style of roofing.
