chip box. Also called wagemono 綰物 (bent round object) or himono 
檜物 (cypress object). A utilitarian liquid storage container or kurimono 
刳物 (hollowed out object), used since the Yayoi period and before the invention 
of the tub oke 桶 and the barrel taru 樽. Magemono were made 
by bending thin boards of Japanese cypress hinoki 檜  or  Japanese 
cedar sugi 杉, softened by heating or soaking in the hot water, into a circle, then using 
rice glue to attach a bottom board with strips of cherry or birch. |
