Also *koma ¬Τ. Lit. a small room. An old name for a small sized tea ceremony room *chashitsu Ί. During the Muromachi period, tea ceremony rooms had six or eight mats rokujou Zτ or hachijou ͺτ, or 4 1/2 mats *yojouhan lτΌ. By the mid 16c, the fire-box was set into the floor and had a ditch reed shelf, yoshidana δΡI. From that time the room was usually 4 1/2 mats or smaller. The smaller tea ceremony rooms were called kozashiki. Examples: 4 1/2 mats: Daitokuji Gyokurin-in Kasumidoko-no-seki εΏΚΡ@ΰ°Θ (1742); 3 mats: Daitokuji Jukouin Kan'in-no-seki εΏγΪυ@ΥBΘ (1741) in Kyoto; 2 mats: Taimadera Nakanobouseki VVΘ (1645-1651) in Nara ; 2 mats plus 1 smaller: Daitokuji Shinjuan Teigyokuken εΏ^μΑλΚ¬ (early 17c) in Kyoto; 1 mat plus 1 smaller mat: Kanden'an cΑ (late 18c) in Shimane prefecture. | ||||||
