koukamon 皇嘉門

1 Also called ryuuguumon 竜宮門. A unique type of mausoleum gate *byoumon 廟門 built at Rinnouji Taiyuuin 輪王寺大猷院, Nikkou 日光, Tochigi prefecture. The mausoleum, Reibyou 霊廟 of Tokugawa Iemitsu 徳川家光 (1604-51), was built in the mid-17c, at this temple in Nikkou. It has undulating bargeboards *karahafu 唐破風, on the front, back, and both sides. It has a single ridge, and a high gate *roumon 楼門, 1-bay deep in the purlin direction and 2-bays deep in the transverse direction. The gate also has a gable roof *kirizuma yane 切妻屋根. The bottom part of the gate is covered with white plaster and the doors are brightly colored and embellished with gold.

2 One of twelve gates in the enclosure of the Imperial Palace, Daidairi 大内裏, at the Heian capital, Heiankyou 平安京 in Kyoto. Also called gagakuryoumon 雅楽寮門 or kashimon 歌司門.

3  The ENGISHIKI 延喜式, a collection of books outlining all the regulations and aspects pertaining to the Imperial Palace in the 9c, contains a reference to a 2-storied, single roofed gate, 5-bays wide with 3-openings which is called koukamon.
