Kanazawa Hakkei　金沢八景

Lit. Eight views of Kanazawa. Eight scenic spots around Kanazawa, the southern part of Kuraki 久良岐 in Sagami 相模 province (modern Kanagawa prefecture), which were popular with Edoites as destinations for pleasure excursions, particularly from the late 17c onward. The idea of choosing eight views is in the tradition of *hakkei 八景. The eight views of Kanagawa are: Hirakata no rakugan 平潟落雁 (Descending Geese at Hirakata), Otsutomo no kihan 乙艫帰帆 (Returning Sails at Otsutomo), Suzaki no seiran 州崎晴嵐 (Clearing Mist at Suzaki), Nojima no sekishou 野島夕照 (Sunset Glow at Nojima), Seto no shuugetsu 瀬戸秋月 (Autumn Moon at Seto), Koizumi no yau 小泉夜雨 (Night Rain at Koizumi), Shoumyou no banshou 称名晩鐘 (Evening Bell at Shoumyou), and Uchikawa no bosetsu 内川暮雪 (Evening Snow at Uchikawa). The eight views of Kanazawa were illustrated primarily by *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 artists including Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重 (also known as Andou 安藤 Hiroshige, 1797-1858) and Katsushika Hokusai 葛飾北斎 (1760-1849) in both paintings and woodblock prints.
