Also kamagami Š˜_. The tutelary deity of the hearth or cooking range *kamado Š–, and by extension of the kitchen. Found in parts of Touhoku “Œ–k, especially Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima prefecture‚“. A mask of his features made of wood or occasionally of clay, was often affixed to a beam *hari —ΐ, or to the freestanding post *dokuritsubashira “Ζ—§’Œ, closest to the kamado at the rear of the earthfloored area *doma “yŠΤ, in farmhouses in Miyagi prefecture. Also called *kamaotoko Š˜’j (cauldron male).
