iwaza 岩座 | ||||||
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures | ||||||
A base
for Buddhist images *daiza
台座, made of rock. It is also referred to as banjakuza 盤石座 which
means a huge rock base. In the Buddhist pantheon, images of guardian figures
and *myouou 明王 most
commonly have rock bases. A rock base is considered an appropriate iconographic
symbol to demonstrate the steadfastness of *Fudou
Myouou 不動明王, the Unmovable One. There are two types of iwaza,
one is rock, and the another is rectangular and also made of rock with rough
pieces of wood attached to the sides. The Fudou is sometimes seated on a
base made of rock. Although this base is a type of iwaza, it is specifically
named *shitsushitsuza
瑟々座. |
