Inen　伊年

A name found in seals applied to many works by Tawaraya Soutatsu 俵屋宗達 (? - 1640?) and by members of his school, both in combination with a signature and alone. The name is thought to be either Soutatsu's artistic name, gou 号 or the name of his studio, but is unclear. On works directly attributable to Soutatsu and his follower, Tawaraya Sousetsu 俵屋宗雪 (active mid-17c), the Inen seal is a large round seal in red ink. The Inen seal used by another follower, Kitagawa Sousetsu 喜多川相説 (active mid-17c), is a small square seal with letters that remain white against a red background. Both these sizes of seals were used by other painters working in the Soutatsu style. One example of the use of the Inen seal on a work by Soutatsu himself is the hanging scroll, The Lotus Pond and Water Fowl Renchi suikin-zu 蓮池水禽図 (Kyoto National Meseum).
