inakama　田舎間

Also edoma 江戸間. A length of 1.8m or less, defining the standard length of a single bay: the distance from the center of one main pillar to the center of the next main pillar. Used in Hokkaidou 北海道, Touhoku 東北, and the Kantou 関東 region during the Edo period. Also the measurements of a *tatami 畳 mat, up to 176cm by 88cm, used in northern Gifu, Toyama, Ishikawa and Mie prefectures. These were the standard dimensions used to build vernacular dwellings *minka 民家, as well as tea ceremony rooms from the the end of the Muromachi period. Inakama is used in contradistinction with *kyouma 京間, approximately 190.9cm, the standard tatami and bay measure of the Kansai 関西 region.
