ikake　鋳掛

Repairing a hole or crack in a metal object. There are two methods: 1) A crack in a metal statue or vessel is filled by pouring melted metal directly into the crack. 2) In ancient bronze statues, where there was a hole in the statue, a mould was made conforming to the shape of the hole, and a new piece was cast and fitted to fill the hole. Both methods are known as ikake. There are many examples of statues repaired using ikake, including the Shaka sansonzou 釈迦三尊像 in Houryuuji 法隆寺, Nara.
