heiden 幣殿 | ||||||
KEY WORD : architecture / shrines | ||||||
A shrine building, usually located on the same axis
as the worship hall *haiden 拝殿
and sanctuary *honden 本殿, in between
these two buildings. In the heiden, offerings, heihaku 幣帛, paper or silk
cuttings or red and white cloth are presented to the god(s) kami 神. It
is also occasionally used as a place to recite prayers and can serve as a higher
ranked seat for worshipping at a shrine. The heiden may be a separate building,
or structure joined to the haiden, or it may form a passageway *ai-no-ma 相間, between the haiden and honden. The size of heiden also
varies considerably and there are exceptions regarding its location. For example,
the Heiden of Naikuu 内宮 at Ise Jinguu 伊勢神宮 was located beyond
the outermost of the four fences surrounding the sacred precinct. Examples: 1) Kamo Mioya Jinja Heiden 賀茂御祖神社幣殿 (1628) in Kyoto. This building is joined at its north end to the Noritosha 祝詞舎 and is 7 x 2 bays. 2) Kamo Wakeikazuchi Jinja Heiden 賀茂別雷神社幣殿 (1863) in Kyoto. An independent building, 4 x 3 bays. 3) Jinushi jinja Heiden 地主神社幣殿 (1502) in Shiga prefecture. 4) Itsukushima Jinja Heiden 厳島神社幣殿 in Hiroshima prefecture. 5) Nikkou Toushouguu Heiden 日光東照宮幣殿 in Tochigi prefecture. . |
