hake 刷毛

A wide, multi-purpose brush made of animal hair attached to a wooden handle. Hake range in size from 3cm to 18 cm in width. They are used for large-surface underpainting, for applying sizing *dousa 礬水, for preparing the surface with water, mizubari 水張り, and for adding colored pigments. Soft full brushes, used to dampen the paper or fabric before backing, are called mizubake 水刷毛 (water brush). Wide, stiff long-bristled brushes, uchibake 打ち刷毛 (tamping brush) are used to strike the paper backing to aid in adhering layers of paper or fabric. Wide, short-haired horsehair brushes, noribake 糊刷毛 (paste brush) are used to apply the paste, while another type of wide brush, nadebake なで刷毛 (smoothing brush) is employed to smooth the pasted lining paper onto the backs of paper or fabric covers. Karabake 唐刷毛 or 空刷毛, are made from deer hair, range from 3-12cm in width, and are used for shadings and tonal gradations.
