Ch: Fengliuzhen tu. Lit. Depictions of Elegant Battles. A Chinese painting subject included among the Pictures of Pleasure at Court *kyuuraku-zu ‹{Šy}. According to the description by Kanou Ikkei Žë–ìˆêŒk (1599-1662) in *KOUSOSHUU Œã‘fW, when wine was flowing, Xuanzong (Jp: *Gensou Œº@) and his consort Yang Guifei (Jp: *Youkihi —k‹M”Ü) would gather about 100 court ladies, divide them into two armies, provide them with flowering branches, and enjoy watching them set against each other. These elegant battles reportedly took place in the Taiyeting (Jp: Taiekitei ‘¾‰t’ë) behind the Daming Palace (Jp: Daimeikyuu ‘å–¾‹{) at Chang'an (Jp: Chouan ’·ˆÀ). The theme was painted most frequently during the late 16c and early 17c on fans and screens by *Kanouha Žë–ì”h artists. When painted on screens, the theme was often paired with other kyuuraku-zu such as the Butterfly of Happiness *choukou-zu ’±K}, or a scene from The Song of Everlasting Sorrow (Ch: Changheng; Jp: Chougonka ’·¦‰Ì). The theme could also be matched with other themes involving the court, such as Four Graybeards Return to Court, shikou raichou Žlá©—ˆ’©. | ||||||
