funagata kouhai　舟形光背

Also funagatakou 舟形光. Lit. boat-shaped halo. A halo *kouhai 光背, with a pointed top, found on Buddhist images. The funagata kouhai encloses a round head nimbus *zukou 頭光, and a body nimbus *shinkou 身光. Good examples are found on the central Shaka Nyoraizou 釈迦如来像 (623) in Houryuuji *Kondou 法隆寺金堂, and the Jizou bosatsuzou 地蔵菩薩像 (10c) in Murouji 室生寺, both in Nara. Funagata kouhai are sometimes decorated with flying apsaras figures *hiten 飛天.
