KEY WORD : art history / sculptures
Replica casting. A technique used in metal casting, where a simple, flat metal object was covered with clay to make a mold. Molten metal was then poured into the clay mold to make a copy of the object. The surface details of the replica were slightly blurred as compared with the original, and the object itself a fraction smaller. Fumigaeshi was used from the Nara period through to the Edo period to make replicas of simple cast metal objects, particularly mirrors.
