Lit straight line roof. Roofs without any curved surfaces. A hip roof *yosemune-zukuri Šñ“‘¢, for example, that has straight lines on all four of the descending corner ridges *sumikudarimune ‹÷~“. Roof curves are not used for traditional vernacular dwellings *minka –¯‰Æ, warriors' dwellings buke yashiki •‰Æ‰®•~ (see *buke-zukuri •‰Æ‘¢), or shrines *jinja _ŽÐ with gable roofs *kirizuma-zukuri ØÈ‘¢ in the shinmei style *shinmei-zukuri _–¾‘¢, ootori style *ootori-zukuri ‘å’¹‘¢ and sumiyoshi style *sumiyoshi-zukuri Z‹g‘¢. The following are examples of chokusen yane.

On minka

On buke yashiki
1@Long gate with living guarters nagayamon ’·‰®–å belonging to middle class warrior chuukyuu bushi ’†‹‰•Žm (Edo period), Ishikawa prefecture. The roof is covered with pantiles *sangawarabuki ŽVŠ¢•˜.

On jinja
1@Nishina Shinmeiguu m‰È_–¾‹{ (1636), Nagano prefecture, shinmei-zukuri, cypress bark shingled roof *hiwadabuki •O”畘.
2@Sumiyoshi Taisha Honden Z‹g‘åŽÐ–{“a (1810), Osaka, sumiyoshi-zukuri, hiwadabuki.
