The method of off-setting alternate stepping stones *tobi-ishi ”ςΞ to create a zig-zag pattern. This staggered pattern is named after the plover or *chidori η’Ή, a bird known for its off-kilter walk. When two or three stones are set in a straight line and then off-set with another set of stones to make a larger zig-zag, the pattern is called *gan'uchi Šε‘Ε (wild geese), because it resembles the flight of a flock of geese.
