The simplest form of robe that a Buddhist priest wears when he is either resting or at work. The andae is one of the three robes *sanne 三衣, traditionally owned by every Buddhist priest. A large number of Buddhist statues, especially *nyorai 如来 images, are shown in this robe. Since it was usually made by sewing together five pieces of rectangular cloth, the robe came to be known as gojou gesa 五条袈裟 (a five-strip robe). | ||||||
