yagenbori 薬研堀
KEY WORD : architecture / castles

A widely used moat with sides that slope like an earthen embankment. The name is derived from the moat having a bottom with a lateral section in the form of a triangular shaped mortar, yagen 薬研, used for pulverizing medicine. Some moats kata yagenbori 片薬研堀 (lopsided yagenbori), have a bottom section with the point of triangulation moved off center to increase the angle of the interior slope of the moat.
